“Juniper Hawkins?”

Juni looked up from a form that was asking about a life insurance beneficiary. “Do I have to have a life insurance beneficiary? How dangerous is this job?”

The woman calling her name smiled at her. "It's not, but apparently Aubrey is putting you on salary, which means you get benefits from the corporation. One of those benefits is a retirement account and a life insurance policy."

“Holy shit.” She pressed her lips together. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have said holy shit.” She swallowed. “Twice. Uh, I’m Juni.” She stuck out her hand. “Juniper is my legal name, but everyone calls me Juni.”

“Juni, I’m Rani.” They shook hands. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m an editor here at Distinction. I coordinate all our staff photographers and take care of assignments.”

“Oh wow.” Juni jumped to her feet. “So you’re like… my boss?”

Rani smiled. "I will be your supervisor, yes. And the life insurance policy is not big, but you do need to finish filling out all those forms." She motioned across the massive room filled with desks, computers, and bustling people. "Would you like to join me in my office? I have some time right now, and I can answer any questions you might have about the job or the forms."

“That would be awesome.” Juni grabbed her backpack and slung it over her shoulder. “Do you think I need a briefcase if I work here?”

Rani was older than Juni, probably mid-thirties at least, and she was wearing what Juni was beginning to think of as the Distinction uniform. A super-hot and very expensive-looking outfit that was styled to look like it was thrown together but probably took two hours to compose.

Her new boss glanced over her shoulder. “Absolutely not. In fact, I’m going to suggest you do a regular streetwear feature for the online edition of the fashion division. Did you pick out your outfit?”

Juni glanced down at her second-hand store outfit. "Uh, yeah." It was cheap, and Juni hated looking like other people.

"You have a great eye. You're that cool girl that forward-thinking designers want to emulate. So no." Rani opened a glass door that led into a glass-walled office. "Do not change your wardrobe."

“Okay.” She looked around, wondering where to sit. “So about the life insurance thing—”

"Complicated family?" Rani walked around to a chair on the other side of a long table with stacks of papers, files, and photographs organized in neat piles.

"Yeah." Juni sat on the other side of the table and sat her backpack on another chair. "You could say that."

"Your life insurance beneficiary does not have to be a relative, okay? And it's really not a huge amount, but it does go up for every year you work here. The magazine's owner is from France, so he has very different ideas about how employees should be paid."

Juni whispered. “Is that why I’m making so much?”

Rani’s eyebrows went up. “I have no idea what they’re paying you to start so—”

“Like, over three thousand dollars. A month.” Juni still couldn’t believe it.
